Zello vs Teams vs WhatsApp vs traditional radios
Four very different tools get used for field communication. Here is what each one is genuinely good at, and where each one fails.
Traditional radios
Excellent instant voice inside a defined footprint, and they keep working when the internet does not. They produce no record, no location, no accountability and no data, and expanding coverage is a capital project.
Free, universal and already installed. It is also asynchronous — a voice note is not a call, nobody is guaranteed to hear it, and there is no talkgroup discipline. Critically, operational evidence ends up in a personal account on a personal phone, which is a compliance problem the moment a worker leaves.
Microsoft Teams
Strong for office collaboration and increasingly capable on mobile, but it is built for knowledge workers. It assumes a licensed identity per user, it is not designed for a physical PTT key on a rugged device, and it has no concept of man-down, checkpoints or dispatch.
Zello
The clearest like-for-like PTT replacement, and genuinely good at what it does. It remains primarily a communications product: it moves voice extremely well but leaves dispatch, tasking, inspections, asset scanning, attendance and evidence to other systems.
Where the gap is
The unsolved problem is not voice quality. It is that the voice call, the worker's location, the job they were assigned, the checkpoint they scanned and the photo they took all live in separate systems that nobody reconciles.
