Why businesses are replacing two-way radios with LTE

Coverage, cost and capability are pushing organisations off licensed radio and onto LTE-based field communication. Here is what actually changes.

For decades, two-way radio was the only realistic option for instant field communication. The trade-off was accepted: you paid for repeaters, licences, tower space and site engineers, and in exchange you got a private network that worked reliably inside a defined footprint.

That trade-off no longer holds. LTE and 5G coverage now exceeds what almost any private radio network can economically deliver, and the device in every worker's pocket already has the radio hardware built in.

The economics changed first

A conventional radio upgrade is a capital project. Repeaters, licensing, antenna work, spares and a multi-year hardware refresh cycle routinely put a mid-sized fleet upgrade well past $30,000 before a single conversation happens.

An LTE-based deployment is an operating expense. There is no infrastructure to buy, no licence to renew, and coverage expands whenever the carrier expands.

Coverage stopped being a footprint

Radio coverage is bounded by geography. A guard who leaves the site loses contact. A driver between depots is unreachable. LTE-based push-to-talk removes the boundary entirely — a talkgroup spans a city, a province or a continent with no engineering change.

The capability gap is the real story

Radios move voice. That is all they were designed to do. Once communication runs over IP, the same device can carry GPS position, task assignment, checklists, photo evidence, NFC checkpoint scans and man-down alerting on the same connection.

This is why the conversation has moved out of IT and into operations. The buyer is no longer replacing a radio — they are digitising how field work is recorded and supervised.

What to watch for

  • Latency: anything above roughly 300ms breaks the rhythm of a real conversation.
  • Battery and background behaviour on consumer phones, which aggressively suspend apps.
  • Whether existing radio assets can be bridged rather than scrapped.
  • Whether the platform records evidence you can defend in a contract dispute.
