Five mistakes organisations make with field communications
The recurring errors we see in field communication projects, and the cheaper decision available in each case.
1. Buying coverage they do not need
Engineering a private network to cover an entire region when the carrier already covers 98% of it is the single most expensive mistake in this category.
2. Letting WhatsApp become the operational record
It happens by default rather than by decision. The result is that incident evidence lives in personal accounts, leaves with the employee, and cannot be produced when a client or regulator asks.
3. Treating lone-worker safety as a policy problem
A written procedure does not raise an alarm. Automated detection with escalation does. If an unacknowledged emergency stops at one unattended device, the control has failed.
4. Deploying voice and operations as separate systems
A PTT app, a GPS tracker, a forms app and a time clock from four vendors gives four logins, four bills and no joined-up record of the work.
5. Ignoring the device the worker actually carries
Cleaning crews, churches, schools and small warehouses will not carry a second device. Meeting them on their own phone is what makes deployment happen in a day rather than a quarter.
